A solar powered energy system has been installed in Mumuthumburru (West Island) in remote Northern Territory enabling residents to return to Country supported by a 100% renewable energy system and the restoration of critical water and communication services.

The installation of the solar powered energy system stems from a campaign led by local families to source independent funding to restore energy services, including touring a short film .

The film features the story of Garrwa elder Shirley Simon, who like many other r Mumuthumburru residents, was forced to relocate from their homeland to Borroloola in 2021 after their former solar system was decommissioned.
