A riveting true-life story of an Indian kid who got lost and separated from his family in India and made his way to Australia with his adopted parents, premiered in Australia at Sydney's State Theatre on Monday night. 

The film, which has already landed four Golden Globe nominations, is also expected to make it to Oscars in the new year. The film is slated for release in Australia on January 19th, 2017.

The film, titled Lion, stars Hollywood stars Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman and traces the story of 5-year-old Saroo who gets lost on a train in India.

Separated from his mother and brother, Saroo travels thousands of kilometres across India before he is adopted by an Australian couple, who bring him to Australia.

Twenty five years later, Saroo who now lives in Hobart, Tasmania and has grown up the ‘Australian way’ feels an irresistible urge to find his family in India.

With the help of google earth, Saroo finds out that he was originally from Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh and sets out to look for his mother.

The film is based on Saroo Brierley’s book, A Long Way Home.

The premiere in Sydney received a standing ovation where Saroo Brierley and his adoptive parents Sue and John were present with the filmmakers on stage.
