Most Temporary Work (Skilled) visas granted to Indians in first half of 2020-21

Australia has granted 20,893 temporary resident skilled visas in the first six months of this financial year. Most of them were Indian citizens.

According to the latest published by the Department of Home Affairs, Australia granted 20,893 temporary resident skilled visas in the first six months of this financial year.

Out of 20,893 visas, a total of 4,599 applicants were Indian citizens while 642 were Chinese citizens. 3323 applicants were citizens of the United Kingdom.

In 2019-20 a total of 55,060 temporary resident skilled visas were granted, and 28,414 were primary applicants. The number of applicants of Indian citizenship granted temporary resident skilled visas were 13,434 (6,334 primary applicants) in 2019-20.

New South Wales granted the most number of temporary resident skilled visas (9,512) in the first half of the current financial year while Victoria granted 4,402 temporary resident skilled visas.

Despite the fact, the Indian citizens are the top receivers of temporary skilled visas, migration agent Rohit Mohan says the numbers are a little low.

“The data from the first six months of the financial year 2020-21 indicates that around 22% of total temporary skilled visas were granted to Indian citizens," he said.

"This figure is low compared to the last financial year 2019-20, where the percentage of Indian applicants who were granted temporary resident skilled visas was 24%.

“However, it is quite high compared to UK citizens who contributed 16% and China, which contributed only 3% of total temporary skilled visas in the first six months of the financial year 2020-21. The percentage is particularly high in Victoria and New South Wales where the proportion of Indian citizens were 29% and 26% respectively. This reflects the preference of Indian migrants towards these two states.
