Indian missions register thousands of complaints against NRI husbands

Over 3000 women have complained against their NRI husbands since 2015, says Indian government.

The Indian government says it has received over 3000 complaints from women against their NRI husbands since 2015.

The Indian missions across the world received 3,328 complaints from Indian women about marital disputes with their NRI spouses since 2015, government informed the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India on Thursday, reports.

The Minister of State in India’s External Affairs Ministry, Mr VK Singh in a written response said, of the 3,328 complaints, 3,268 were addressed by way of providing the women counselling, guidance and information about procedures, mechanisms for serving judicial summons to the overseas Indian husbands.

1022 complaints were received till November 30th this year by Indian missions abroad, with 796 complaints received in 2015 and 1,510 received in 2016.

Mr Singh said assistance was extended in filing a case against the husband in India, issuing a lookout circular, impounding and revocation of the Indian passport of the husband, and getting access to lawyers and NGOs empanelled with Indian missions and legal and financial assistance.

Mr Singh told the Parliament, the government has assisted 88,302 Indians residing abroad in the times of emergency and conflict since 2014.

"Since 2014, an increasing number of women are approaching the government through the social media for assistance. Use of social media is quick and every minute the people are increasingly using this route hence very dynamic," Singh said, adding that the external affairs minister herself receives a large number of requests on her Twitter handle.
