73-year-old Indian Australian doctor has been awarded the 2017 Pravasi Bharatiya Saaman award by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee in the field of community service.
Sydney-based Dr Gorur Krishna Harinath received this prestigious award for his contribution to the community, in Bengaluru on Monday.
“My wife Gayathri hails from this city (Bengaluru) and I feel proud to receive the award. She couldn’t accompany me as she has to take care of our grandchildren in Australia,” he said.
Dr. Harinath was born in Hyderabad and shared that his forefathers had moved from Karnataka to Hyderabad.

“My father worked in Osmania University and I was born in Hyderabad. I moved to Australia some 45 years ago,” he said.
Dr. Harinath is a well-known and loved figure within the Indian community in Australia.
Apart from practising medicine at Eastgardens Medical Centre in Sydney, he is also the Chair Person of Multicultural NSW.

He is a prominent face at the Indian community events in Australia and is an ardent cricket fan. He currently also serves as honorary Chairman, Board of Directors of Cricket NSW and is a Board member at Cricket Australia.
