A three-year-old Sydney boy has died in a freak accident.

He was on the footpath with his father on Lumley Street in Granville around 5.30pm on Tuesday evening, when two cars collided in front of them.

One of the cars then lost control, dashed towards the footpath and struck the toddler who suffered critical injuries.

A NSW ambulance spokesman said the boy suffered a cardiac arrest and officers performed CPR at the scene before taking him to The Children's Hospital at Westmead where he later died.

NSW Police Inspector Ron Tarlington told ABC that one of the cars which crashed mounted the kerb and struck a pram, which had the three-year-old boy inside.

"His parents are devastated ... heartbreaking, people going about their life and a young person has passed away, it's very sad."

His father was not injured in the crash.

A male driver and female passenger from one of the cars were treated by paramedics at the scene, while the male driver of the second car was taken to Westmead Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.

Lumley Street between William Street and Mary Street is expected to remain closed for some time as specialist forensic officers examine the scene.

Police urged anyone who was in the area and had not spoken to police to contact Crime Stoppers.
