Wage theft is now a crime in Victoria

Victoria has become the first jurisdiction in Australia to bring into effect laws criminalising wage theft. Union and industry advocates say wage theft is far too common in Australia, and urge other states and territories to follow Victoria's lead.

Highlights:

• Victoria has become the first jurisdiction in Australia to bring into effect laws criminalising wage theft.
• The laws ensure crimes are punishable with 10 years jail for individuals and steep fines of $198,264 for individuals, or close to $1 million for companies.
• The Bill was passed on 16 June 2020, with the Act coming into force on 1 July 2021.
