COVID-19 update: Tasmania relaxes rules; New Zealand scraps pre-departure test requirements

On Thursday, Australia reported at least 59 COVID-19 deaths, including 22 in Victoria, 17 in New South Wales (NSW) and 13 in Queensland. Also, Western Australia reported 14 historical deaths.

Tasmania will ease face mask restrictions from 12.01 am on Saturday, 25 June. As a result, residents will no longer be required to wear face masks in schools, early childhood centres and public transport, including on the Spirit of Tasmania. 

Travellers are no longer required to wear face masks at Tasmanian and the Northern Territory airports from 12.01 am on 18 June. Other Australian jurisdictions are expected to make similar announcements soon. 

However, face masks are still mandatory on all flights.

People travelling to New Zealand will no longer be required to show a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test from 21 June. However, travellers must self-test on day 0/1 and again on day 5/6.

Qantas is likely to announce its updated face mask policy soon. It is expected that passengers will no longer be asked to wear face masks on flights to destinations such as the US, the UK and Europe, where face masks on flights are not mandatory.

Advisors to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have recommended Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for children under five. However, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are still to give their final approvals.
